Communities who know each other are stronger communities – in good times and in bad
In the event of a natural disaster, such as an earthquake, our district may become isolated. Initially, Civil Defence Emergency Management will prioritise support for Queenstown and Wanaka, so it's crucial for Hāwea residents (Lake Hāwea and Hāwea Flat) to be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least three weeks, with minimal national support.
The Hāwea Community Response Group (HCRG) consists of local volunteers dedicated to ensuring our community is as prepared as possible for such a scenario. In the event of a disaster, our group's role will be to provide information to our community and gather information for reporting to our local emergency hub.
To enhance our preparedness, an educational campaign is needed to ensure that every resident in the Hāwea district understands their personal responsibilities in getting ready for a disaster.
Let's work together to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.
